December Poll Question: What Old School Computer Launched Your Love of IT?

This month, Devolutions wants to know: what old-school computer system launched your love of IT?

Coralie Lemasson

Meet Coralie, the Product Marketing Writer and Editor at Devolutions who brings literary insight to every piece of content she creates. Her formal training in English education has paved the way for a career centered on her love for language and writing. Outside the office, Coralie enjoys the finer things in life — lattes, wine, and interior design — and the nerdier things, like Star Trek, board games, and deep theological discussions. She shares her life with her curious equine companion, Arrakis, who’s as introverted, clumsy, and food-motivated as she is. Arrakis reminds her daily that while words and semantics are vital, true communication transcends the spoken and written word. Interactions based in honesty and goodwill can bridge the widest gaps — whether between humans, or species.

Recently, we published a blog article admiring some tech relics from the good ‘ol days, such as the sleek 1956 Frigidaire Refrigerator, and the glorious Panasonic electric pencil sharpener from the 1980s.

In the comments of that blog, we noticed that some community members mentioned the first computer system that they fell in love with many years ago, such as the Commodore 64, MSX, and Kaypro (now with 9” screen!).

Poll Question

So for our December poll question, we thought it would be interesting and nostalgic to ask: What old-school computer launched your love of IT?

This old-school computer may have been the very system that you used, or something you encountered later on in life that just blew your mind and played a key role in making you into the gifted, amazing, and ultra-smart IT pro you are today.

To name a few old-school computer systems that reigned supreme in the early days of the home computer revolution:

  • TRS-80
  • TI-99/4A
  • Apple IIe
  • IBM PCjr
  • Coleco Adam
  • Commodore Amiga
  • Osborne 1
  • Timex Sinclair 1000
  • ZX Spectrum
  • NEC PC-98

These are just a few of the many possible old-school computer systems that could have amazed and inspired you. If you want some other ideas, then check out Old-Computer.com, which is a digital museum of 1286 systems (yes, that’s right: 1286!).

In early January we’ll review the responses, and unleash a tidal wave of sweet nostalgia. Good times!

You Could Win

Just by participating in the poll, you’ll be automatically entered to win one of two $25 Amazon gift cards. It’s a great opportunity to possibly get the gift you really wanted (yeah, socks are nice — but LEGO is better).

Thanks in advance for participating, and we can’t wait to see the old-school computer systems that launched your IT dreams!
