The good news is that there are a lot — we mean A LOT — of YouTube tech channels out there. Unfortunately, that’s also the bad news. Sifting through the mediocre to find the masterful can be time consuming and frustrating!
To help you find the best — and avoid the rest — we asked some of the staff here to share their favorite YouTube tech channels, and we also did some digging to see what channels are generating buzz and wielding influence.
Below we list five notable YouTube tech channels (and their social media) that we encourage you to check out and consider adding to your regular rotation (please note that the number of subscribers/videos is approximate):
Channel: Marques Brownlee/MKBHD
Subscribers: 19.6 million
Videos: 1,600
About: There are plenty of YouTubetech channels that center around reviewing gadgets, and frankly in our view many of them are generic, predictable, and just plain meh. And if you’ve never heard of Marques Brownlee (a.k.a. MKBHD), then you might think that his channel is more of the same. Well, you’d be wrong — just ask the nearly 20 million tech enthusiasts around the world who can’t get enough of his content.
There are a few things that make Marques’ channel so compelling, unique, and in our view deserving of a spot on our list. To start with, he’s remarkably — and at some relentlessly — honest and unbiased. If he’s not impressed by a product, then he won’t hesitate to explain why. Next, he’s very knowledgeable, which allows him to provide illuminating technical insights into various products. Plus, he doesn’t limit his coverage to just major brands, as many lesser-known products are also featured on his channel. And he’s renowned for his focus on user experience. He doesn’t just talk about products, but he tests them in real-world situations to reveal the good, the bad, and sometimes the ugly.
Add to this that Marques comes across as a genuinely nice, friendly person — the kind of guy you’d like to sit down and chat with. If you haven’t yet done so, check out his channel. We’re confident that after watching a few videos that you’ll want to stick around.
Channel: Unbox Therapy
Subscribers: 24.8 million
Videos: 2,200
About: The cleverly-named Unbox Therapy is one of the most popular tech channels available — and for many good reasons. Unlike some other channels that dabble in unboxing videos from time to time, Unbox Therapy focuses exclusively on revealing what the out-of-the-box experience looks and feels like for highly-anticipated products from major brands like Apple, Google, Sony, etc.
The channel’s host Lewis Hilsenteger has a genuine enthusiasm for tech, and despite doing thousands of these videos (including several a week), you never get the sense that he is bored and going through the motions. He approaches each unboxing video with the excitement of a kid unwrapping a gift at Christmas. Of course, sometimes he isn’t impressed by what he discovers — and when that happens, he doesn’t hesitate to express and explain his disappointment.
While Unbox Therapy provides a lot of technical information and insight — and can help people discover why they may or may not want to purchase a product — what makes the channel so popular is that it’s highly entertaining. The tech world can be a serious, and sometimes severe place. We all need to remind ourselves that it can also be a fun adventure.
Channel: Web Dev Simplified
Subscribers: 1.63 million
Videos: 730
About: In terms of subscribers, Web Dev Simplified is significantly smaller than the YouTube tech channels that we’ve looked at above. However, this is one case where size definitely isn’t an indicator of quality or value!
Web Dev Simplified is a refreshingly straightforward channel that provides exactly what you would expect from the name: tutorials and other resources for learning web development skills. However, the channel’s content is not just for beginners. There are many videos that cover advanced web development topics, including web app security and authentication.
The channel’s creator and host Kyle Cook is one of those rare IT pros who is not just highly knowledgeable, but who can explain complex concepts in a practical, efficient, and clear manner. He loves teaching and mentoring, and this passion is evident in every video.
If you check out Web Dev Simplified — and we strongly encourage you to do so — then be sure to watch some of Kyle’s hilarious parody videos, such as one where he profiles “every type of bad programmer.” There is also some great practical advice for new freelancers on what to expect and how to handle the business side of things.
Channel: Fireship
Subscribers: 978,000
Videos: 680
About: Fireship is another relatively smaller channel in terms of subscribers and videos, but it has a fiercely loyal following — and this is well-deserved. Fireship features tutorials and tips on a variety of topics related to mobile, web, and cloud development.
The channel’s creator Jeff Delaney is a master when it comes to putting together short and highly-focused videos that embrace project-based learning. If want to learn practical and valuable skills faster than you thought possible, then this is the channel for you.
It is also worth mentioning that Jeff, while incredibly competent, is also down-to-earth and friendly — which makes his videos engaging as well as informative. In fact, Jeff originally trained and planned to be an accountant, but he loved writing code so much that he switched career tracks and never looked back. The accounting world’s loss is the programming community’s gain!
Channel: CNET
Subscribers: 3.9 million
Videos: 22,000
About: Unlike the other channels that we’ve discussed above, CNET’s agenda is more about living a “tech lifestyle.” This means that in addition to product reviews, it also features videos covering tech news, trends, issues, updates, and culture. Overall, it’s a nice diverse mix. If you want to learn about the specs and features of the M4 Mac Mini, there’s content for you. Or if you want to speculate on the impact of AI on society, there’s content for you. Basically, if it’s part of the tech world and enough people are interested in it or affected by it, then there’s a good chance you’ll find something relevant and worthwhile about it on CNET.
Honorable mention: Devolutions!
Not to steal focus or anything, but we did want to point out for those unaware that Devolutions also has a YouTube channel, which you’ll find here.
Now, do we have nearly 20 million subscribers like Marques Brownlee? Er…not quite. Do we have around 22,000 videos like CNET? Um…we’re working on it.
However, what we DO have is a growing library of exclusive content that dives deep into our products and updates, as well as webinars and events like Devolutions Central. Subscribe to stay informed of the latest content. And who knows? Maybe in a few years we’ll have 20 million subscribers and 22,000 videos (we’ll have to get a bigger production studio!).
Over to you!
Are you familiar with any of these YouTube tech channels? If so, what is your opinion? And what do you look for in a great channel — and what do you avoid?
