Back in the 1970s, a young filmmaker named George Lucas had an idea for what he called a space opera. It would have all of the fundamental dramatic elements of an opera — with a stirring original soundtrack instead of singing — but it would take place “a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away.”
Believe it or not, but Lucas himself didn’t think that the film, which would later be called Star Wars: A New Hope, would be a success. In fact, virtually all his friends and family thought it was too crazy of an idea to be a hit. We say “virtually” and not “entirely,” because George had a pal who not only loved the concept, but was confident it would be a sensation. That guy was named Steven Spielberg. And about five decades — and more than $50 billion dollars in franchise earnings later — we can see that he was absolutely right!
However, as Master Yoda would remind us, “Always in motion is the future,” which is a good — no, make that GREAT — thing, because it means that there is an ongoing stream of more Star Wars content to experience, enjoy, and of course, debate about (like whether Han or Gredo shot first in A New Hope, why does the blast-proof AT-AT armor in The Empire Strikes Back suddenly stop working, and the list goes on and on).
And so, on this most sacred of days in the Star Wars calendar — May the 4th — let’s take a look at the upcoming TV series and movies in the Star Wars universe.
TV SERIES
Star Wars: Visions - Volume 2
Release: May 4, 2023
About: Star Wars: Visions is an animated anthology series. The initial release, which premiered on September 22, 2021, was made of nine anime-inspired original short films from various Japanese animation studios, which present a different cultural perspective of Star Wars.
Star Wars: Young Jedi Adventures
Release: May 4, 2023
About: Created for young children (though enjoyed by many parents!), Star Wars: Young Jedi Adventures is a delightful animated series, designed to give kids their very first introduction to the wonders and magic of the Star Wars universe.
Star Wars: Ahsoka

Star Wars Skeleton Crew
Release: Sometime in 2023
About: Star Wars Skeleton Crew takes place during the post–Return of the Jedi reconstruction that follows the fall of the Empire (the same as The Mandalorian and Ashoka). It focuses on a group of four children who are lost in space and trying to find their way home.
Star Wars: Andor Season 2
Release: August 2024
About: The premiere season of Andor — which was met with widespread acclaim — followed the rise of a rebellion against the Galactic Empire as seen by the main character, who was first introduced in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Very little is known about the plot of Andor season two. However, we do know that this will be the final season, and how it will end. Here is what the show’s creator Tony Gilroy has said: “The final scene of the show is [Andor] walking out to the ship to go to the Rings of Cafrain. I mean, we’re walking you into the film, right to that moment. And, we’re gonna let you know how he got there, what it cost him, the power of the journey that isn’t entirely self-directed. There’s a lot of circumstances that [have] brought him to this.”
Star Wars: The Acolyte
Release: Sometime in 2024
About: The Acolyte is set before the events of the main Star Wars films. It will focus on the emergence of dark side powers in the final days of the High Republic Era.
Star Wars: Lando
Release: Unknown — In Development
About: This series, which was announced in 2020, will focus on its namesake: the one and only Lando Calrissian. Reports are that Donald Glover will play the lead role, which he debuted in Solo: A Star Wars Story.
MOVIES
Taika Waititi's Star Wars Movie
Release: Unknown — In Development
About: Very little is known about this movie — which is exactly what Taika Waititi wants! At the very least, we should expect something new and different. Here’s what he said in an interview last year: “Look, I think for the Star Wars universe to expand, it has to expand. I don’t think that I’m any use in the Star Wars universe making a film where everyone’s like, ‘Oh great, well that’s the blueprints to the Millennium Falcon, ah that’s Chewbacca’s grandmother.’ That all stands alone.” Filming is expected to start in 2024.
Dawn of the Jedi
Release: Unknown — In Development
About: Last month, it was confirmed during Star Wars Celebration Europe that James Mangold, who directed Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, would also direct a Star Wars film set in the time of the Old Republic and centered on the origins of the Jedi.
Dave Filoni's Mandoverse Movie
Release: Unknown — In Development
About: This crossover movie will bring together characters from four TV shows: The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, Ahsoka, and Skeleton Crew. Events will take place after Return of the Jedi and before The Force Awakens.
Sharemen Obaid-Chinoy's Jedi Order Movie
Release: Unknown — In Development
About: This movie, which will be set after Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker, will focus on Jedi Master Rey as she builds a new Jedi order. Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, an Academy Award-winning and International Emmy Award-winning director and journalist, will be the first person of color and the first woman to direct a Star Wars film.
Rian Johnson's Star Wars Trilogy
Release: Unknown — In Development
About: This trilogy of films will explore new characters from an unexplored area of Star Wars lore. The first movie will be produced by Ram Bergman, who also produced Star Wars: Episode VIII The Last Jedi, which Rian wrote and directed.
CANCELLED PROJECTS

Looking Ahead
It has been nearly half a century since we met Luke Skywalker, Yoda, Chewbacca, and the rest of the gang. All of these years later, it’s inspiring to see that the Star Wars universe is constantly expanding with new stories, characters, and concepts. There is plenty for us to look forward to (and binge watch for the 10th time!).
From all of the Star Wars fans here at Devolutions — and there are MANY of them — May the Force Be With You!
