October Poll Question – Special Cybersecurity Month Edition: What is Your BEST Cybersecurity Advice?

Laurence Cadieux

Hello! My name is Laurence Cadieux, and I’m a Communication Coordinnator here at Devolutions. My role includes overseeing the content strategy and development of our blog, managing the content and communication for our VIP advocate platform “Devolutions Force,” and working closely with our PR partners around the world. I also handle our off-site content opportunities (magazines, journals, newspapers, etc.). Academically, I have a bachelor’s degree in marketing. When I’m not working, I sing in a band, and I enjoy watching my favorite movies again and again. I also love cooking, and during the pandemic, I became a bread expert — I can now bake the most amazing key lime pie on earth (if I do say so myself!). Plus, I recently discovered LEGO and there is no turning back — I’m hooked! I’m always happy to help, and you can reach me directly at lcadieux@devolutions.net.

October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month, which is when IT professionals around the world scratch their heads and go: “What are these people talking about!? Cybersecurity awareness isn’t just important for one month of the year, it’s essential at all times!”

Of course, this is true. Hackers and rogue insiders don’t go on vacation (or if they do, they’re immediately replaced — it’s like an assembly line of cyber criminals).

And let’s not forget the huge volume of data breaches that are triggered by negligent end users. In fact, a joint study by Stanford University Professor Jeff Hancock and security firm Tessian found that 88% of data breach incidents are caused by employee mistakes. And the recently-released Global Risks Report from the World Economic Forum says that a whopping 95% of data breach incidents are due to inattentive and/or untrained end users.

That brings us to October’s poll question. Obviously, everyone reading this knows the importance of strong cybersecurity. But what we want to know is: What is your BEST cybersecurity advice?

It can be a single piece of advice — such as always use MFA — or it could be a list of essential requirements. It’s completely up to you. As long as you consider it your BEST cybersecurity advice, then we want to hear it!

Master List

We will review all of the responses, and then put together a master list of the community’s wisdom. Perhaps you’ll get a few ideas for projects and priorities that you want to add to your Cybersecurity Roadmap in 2023. Or just as valuably, you can show your boss (or multiple bosses) the master list and say with authority: “We’re not checking all of these essential boxes, and that is putting us at significant risk.”

You Could Win

Just by participating in this month’s poll you’ll be automatically entered to win one of two $25 Amazon gift cards. We’ll announce the lucky winners when we publish the master list in early November.

Thank you in advance for participating! We look forward to your knowledge and advice!
