“Maybe your best course would be to tread lightly.” — Walter White, Breaking Bad
“Oh, you think darkness is your ally. But you merely adopted the dark; I was born in it, molded by it. I didn't see the light until I was already a man, by then it was nothing to me but blinding.” — Bane, The Dark Knight Rises
Besides being epic, what do these two quotes have in common? They take us back to August’s poll question, which asked: when it comes to software and apps, are you Team Light Mode or Team Dark Mode?
As we had hoped, there were MANY responses. Clearly, this aspect is very important to you. And why shouldn’t it be? Choosing light mode or dark mode is not a small decision, and they each have advantages.
For example, light mode often results in clearer text for individuals with normal (or corrected-to-normal) eyesight. On the other side of the spectrum, dark mode can reduce screen glare and exposure to blue light, plus it extends battery life.
Team Light Mode vs. Team Dark Mode
The anticipated battle between Team Light Mode and Team Dark Mode wasn’t much of a battle at all — because Team Dark Mode won handily, with a whopping 70% of respondents going over to the dark side (thanks to Min Destens for introducing us to this awesome Cookie Monster meme!)
When Dark Mode is Dreadful
However, a few of you pointed out that although you prefer dark mode, on some apps this is terrible. As a result, you are forced to temporarily join Team Light Mode. That’s too bad.
However, be assured that you’ll NEVER be forced to switch sides with our products. We take meticulous (read: obsessive) care in designing dark mode for all of our apps. So don’t worry: if you love dark mode, then we’ve got you covered.
You Light Up My Life App
And what about Team Light Mode? Well, 17% of you prefer this option. As mentioned above, there are some advantages of light mode — and the battery use may not be much of an issue depending on your device and usage habits. Plus, if light mode is something that you’re used to, then switching over to dark mode can be disorienting. It’s like the same app… but different.
Ebony and Ivory
Plus, 13% of you prefer to toggle between dark mode and light mode. The biggest determining factor is the time: light mode during the day, and dark mode during the evening (and middle of the night as you scroll through Reddit… no, you aren’t the only one!).
