Hello! My name is Laurence Cadieux, and I’m a Communication Coordinnator here at Devolutions. My role includes overseeing the content strategy and development of our blog, managing the content and communication for our VIP advocate platform “Devolutions Force,” and working closely with our PR partners around the world. I also handle our off-site content opportunities (magazines, journals, newspapers, etc.). Academically, I have a bachelor’s degree in marketing. When I’m not working, I sing in a band, and I enjoy watching my favorite movies again and again. I also love cooking, and during the pandemic, I became a bread expert — I can now bake the most amazing key lime pie on earth (if I do say so myself!). Plus, I recently discovered LEGO and there is no turning back — I’m hooked! I’m always happy to help, and you can reach me directly at lcadieux@devolutions.net.

[NEWS] Deprecation of Support Announcement for MySQL and MariaDB Data Sources in Remote Desktop Manager

Please note that starting with Remote Desktop Manager 2022.1, we are deprecating support for the data sources MySQL and MariaDB. Moreover, MySQL will be removed altogether from Remote Desktop Manager in 2023.

Why the Deprecation?

We are always reluctant to deprecate support for any feature, function, or integration. However, we have made the decision to do so in this case, because our analysis has found that less than 2% of Remote Desktop Manager customers are using MySQL and MariaDB data sources. Also, the issues our support team was fixing were not related to RDM, but rather directly to MariaDB and MySQL database configurations, 80% of the time.

As a result, deprecating support for MySQL and MariaDB data sources (and eventually deleting MySQL) allows us to reallocate resources more efficiently, and ultimately provide better and faster support.

Deprecation Does Not Mean Deletion

MySQL and MariaDB data sources are NOT being deleted from the Remote Desktop Manager code at this time. This means that if you currently have a MySQL or MariaDB data source in Remote Desktop Manager, nothing will change for you. However, we will not be adding new features, and support will be limited (see next section). That said, in the case of MySQL, we are planning to delete this data source next year.

Please note that for the time being, we will continue to provide support for any security-related issues (CVEs) identified for either the MySQL or MariaDB data sources.

Advice for Affected Customers

We highly recommend that affected customers switch to a supported data source in Remote Desktop Manager such as SQL Server, Devolutions Server, Devolutions Password Hub, or Microsoft Azure SQL.

Customers who face cost constraints may wish to use SQL Server Express as a back end to their Microsoft SQL Server data source. SQL Server Express is a free edition of SQL Server.
