Some Sci-Fi Technologies that are Slowly Coming to Life…

Hey everyone,

If you’re a fan of Sci-Fi movies, you’ve probably caught yourself wondering how long it’s going to take someone like Professor Frink (“he makes you laugh, he makes you think”) to turn some of those cool ideas, into something real that you could pick up at Walmart.

Well, the folks at Tested.com have scoured through a ton of Sci-Fi movies (nice job, huh?) and they’ve identified some Sci-Fi technologies that are s-l-o-w-l-y but surely becoming real. Here’s our pick of the best of what they’ve come up with so far:

Robocops’ Cyborg
Cyborgs

Well, maybe not cyborgs in the crime-fighting -- or perhaps crime-committing -- sense, but we aren’t far away hanging out with boiling people (so don’t accept any arm wrestling bets from people you don’t know!). For example, an amputee named Dennis Aabo Sorensen recently had an artificial left hand WIRED into his nervous system! Wow.

Back to the Future 2’s Hoverboards

Pretty soon, instead of getting stuck in traffic, we’ll all be in the sky atop a hoverboard, just like the kind that Marty McFly used in Back to the Future 2. Of course, we’ll probably just have hoverboard traffic jams, and @#^&Q@# people who don’t realize that the left lane is for passing hoverboards only. Jeeez!

Minority Report’s Holographic Computer Interfaces

Whether you’re a Tom Cruise fan or not, let’s face it: those floating touchscreens in Minority Report were COOL, and we all wished we had one. Well, that wish looks like it’s coming true, with 3-D protected displays being demonstrated around the world. And even Xbox’s Kinect is showing that gesture-controls can work.

Star Wars’ Lightsabers

Darth & Co. don’t stand a CHANCE once everyone is packing their very own Star Wars lightsaber (and we aren’t talking about those glow-in-the-dark kind that you see on Halloween, either). Some folks at Harvard and MIT have already created a photonic molecule that binds protons together in a cloud of rubidium atoms. Translation? IT GLOWS AND IT’S GOOD.

Total Recall’s Self-Driving Cars

Remember the homicidal robotic “Johnny Cab” from Total Recall? Well, Google is already leading the way with their self-driving cars. So it’s just a matter of time before we’ll ALL have our very own homicidal robotic driver! Won’t that be fun?

Iron Man’s Armor

There’s much to like about Iron Man (including the money he makes for each movie), but his armor is definitely #1 on the list. It turns out the US Army agrees, and they’ve already started creating a prototype for a “Tactical Assault Light Operator Suit” that can defend from ballistic weapon impact. It’s also HILARIOUS at parties when you tell people to “punch you in the stomach”, and when they do, they crumble to the floor in agony. Good times.

Her’s Artificial Intelligence

It’s apparently just a matter of time before AI ‘people’ roam the earth and look, sound and act just like human beings. Who knows? Maybe one of your great grand-children will fall in love with a robot. Isn’t that romantic?

What Sci-Fi Ideas Capture Your Imagination?

We’d love to know what you think of these cool** Sci-Fi ideas**. Do any of them capture your imagination? Or are there other ideas from different movies that you want or hope will come to life? Please share your thoughts with us below.

Cheers!
