Still a software developer at heart, I am the products VP at Devolutions, tasked with helping our corporate customers in using our products efficiently, and making sure that our products fulfill their needs by monitoring our workspace in the IT industry. I have worked many years in the Medical Software field, and was 'that' Dev who was always taking care of the network infrastructure because... well... we could not afford to hire an IT guy. This makes me especially in tune with the business requirements of IT staff. Some would say I know just enough to be dangerous, but that's another story...

Dropbox VS Devolutions Online Drive

Dropbox vs Devolutions Online Drive

Hello RDMers,

In the recent overhaul of our Cloud services, we introduced Devolutions Online Drive, much like Dropbox or Amazon S3, this is an online file storage service, but dedicated to a single file type: Remote Desktop Manager's connection list. This is not to say that you cannot have more than one file, indeed you can have multiple ones, but only of that type.

We have found that the Dropbox API (one of the most popular choices of our community) changed way too often. We would get support calls that either the registration or even the simple use of their API weren't working. We then had to assign a developer to identify the issue, fix it, and publish a new build. At first, we had thought that using their API was the better option, because we did not require that any folder be synchronized on the system. It turns out that it cause so many issues that we decided that we needed a better solution.

Another reason for the Online Drive creation was to better support our new mobile clients. Using an online offering makes a lot of sense with our Android Edition (currently in beta), and soon our iOS edition. As can be seen beside, using the Online Drive requires an account to our online services. Both the account and the usage of the Online Drive are free! Simply visit http://cloud.devolutions.net if you haven't done so already. In the advanced settings you will see that we support encryption of the file using a master key, and that even the offline mode is offered!

We hope that this service will be of great use to our community and we're happy to offer it free of charge, even to the users of the Free Editions of our Desktop Clients. Our services are really becoming a true platform and I can assure you that we have a lot of ideas for the future. As always, please let us know your thoughts by using the comment feature of the blog. You can also visit our forums to get help and submit feature requests, you can find them here.
