Back in 1582, France switched from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar. As a result, the first day of the year shifted from (around) April 1 to January 1. However, some people at the time either didn’t get the memo, or they refused to accept the change. Those folks were dubbed “April fools,” and became the target of jokes and hoaxes. For example, a paper fish was placed on their backs and they were referred to as an “April fish” (OK: maybe that wasn’t the most hysterical prank imaginable — but it was still pretty good by 16th century standards.)
Well, here we are nearly 450 years later, and in many places around the world April Fools’ Day is celebrated — or dreaded — on April 1 as pranks are carried out, from the relatively tame to the staggeringly outrageous.
Nicolas Cage, is that you?
Here at Devolutions, we are all about spreading joy and happiness — ESPECIALLY if we can achieve this through a really good April Fools’ Day prank. For example, a few years ago, a prankster among us covertly installed the notorious NCage extension on a colleague’s computer. When that innocent, unsuspecting individual started work the following morning and launched his browser, he found that all images on webpages were pictures of Nicolas Cage!
To make things even funnier, that poor victim didn’t know about the extension. He thought he had been hacked! Eventually, after some stress and panic, his assailant admitted the truth. Who says life in the IT world is serious all the time?
April poll question
This background leads us to the April poll question. This month, we want to know: What is your BEST April Fools’ Day prank?
We are looking for one glorious “I can’t believe that actually happened!” prank that you have either:
