In IT, flexibility is a necessity, and Devolutions is committed to providing the flexibility you need, wherever you are. Access to your remote systems at a moment’s notice, even when Remote Desktop Manager (RDM) isn’t available, is paramount. That’s where our solutions, Devolutions Server (DVLS) and Devolutions Hub, come into play. Whether self-hosted with DVLS or via the cloud with Devolutions Hub, both platforms offer robust web-based remote session support.
Starting with Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP), we steadily expanded our support for remote connections. The latest Devolution Server releases now include support for VNC (Virtual Network Computing) and ARD (Apple Remote Desktop). Devolutions Hub is close behind with ARD support coming soon.
Configure and open your first web-based remote session
Before making web-based remote sessions available, you’ll need to gather a few essential pieces:
- Devolutions Server or Devolutions Hub;
- Devolutions Gateway, configured in Devolutions Server or Devolutions Hub;
- and a remote entry configured (for Hub or DVLS) to use Devolutions Gateway.
In addition, you will need to assign a few essential licenses:
- A user-assigned Remote Desktop Manager or Devolutions Launcher license
- A user-assigned Devolutions Gateway license
Did you know that Devolutions Gateway is free for up to five users? Assign users to the Devolutions Gateway (free) license to start using it today!
Your users must also have the necessary permissions, in the entry, to launch web sessions. Note that permissions differ slightly in Devolutions Server and in Devolutions Hub.
- Devolutions Server: Execute and View password permissions
- Devolutions Hub: Execute permission
When you’ve completed your configurations, navigate to your remote session and locate the Open in web client icon. In DVLS, selecting the icon will open the remote session within a new browser tab. In Hub, the remote session will open in an inline tab in the navigation menu. Like in RDM, injected credentials work as expected. Therefore, you can grant users the right to open a remote session while hiding the credentials used.
Unique to Devolutions Server is true Kerberos support in the web-based RDP client. Unlike in alternatives, you can use your credentials through the secure Kerberos protocol. Even members of the enhanced security Protected Users group within Active Directory can connect!
RDP, VNC, and ARD GUI-based sessions work identically. Configure your entry, then open your web-based sessions in a pinch!
Open terminal sessions as well
Many IT systems, such as SSH, Telnet, and PowerShell, are terminal-based. Like RDP, SSH sessions can be configured to connect through Devolutions Gateway and open a web-based terminal. Though offering a less fully featured terminal than RDM, the web-based terminal lets you resolve issues promptly and conveniently.
Connect to web-based remote sessions through Devolutions Server and Hub
When paired with Devolutions Gateway, Devolutions Server and Hub give you the secure flexibility to work anywhere and on any device you want. Whether through the full-featured RDM client or through the evolving web-based remote session support, Devolutions has your back and will provide you with the flexibility you need.
