Remote Desktop Manager (RDM) now supports a streamlined method to initiate Privileged Session Manager (PSM) connections using CyberArk PVWA credentials. This integration simplifies session launching by passing directly through CyberArk PSM, making it easier for users to connect to PSM-protected resources.

Using the new PSM connection resolving mode

The CyberArk PVWA credential entry in RDM now includes a new Resolving mode option:

  • Credential injection (default): Uses CyberArk to retrieve credentials and inject them into the session but is a direct connection to the endpoint (not going through PSM).
  • PSM connection: Launches the session through PSM, and the PSM server handles the authentication.

This change ensures that users can leverage PSM without requiring password retrieval, addressing concerns about CyberArk policies such as DisableCyberArkPasswordRetrieval. This means that even if that policy is enabled, sessions can still launch since credentials are not retrieved directly. As the connection is established via PSM, all actions are recorded in accordance with policies in CyberArk.

For this example, we are going to create a CyberArk PVWA entry in RDM, link it to an RDP session, and then connect easily through a single action.

  1. Add a new credential entry in RDM.
  2. Choose CyberArk PVWA as the credential type.
  3. In the Resolving mode dropdown, select PSM Connection.

  1. Create, or modify, an RDP session entry to link to the newly created CyberArk PVWA credential entry.

  1. You’re all set! Start leveraging PSM in Remote Desktop Manager.

When a user starts the RDP session, RDM automatically resolves the CyberArk credentials. The session is routed through CyberArk’s PSM gateway before launching to ensure secure connectivity. Finally, the user is authenticated and connected without additional manual steps.

Summary of business and user benefits

User value

  • Simplified session initiation: CyberArk PSM sessions are launched as easily as other RDM entries.
  • Consistency: PSM sessions behave like native RDM connections, reducing possible confusion or setbacks.
  • Improved efficiency: Multiple steps required in CyberArk’s dashboard are eliminated.

Business value

  • Enhanced security compliance: Ensures PSM adoption without workarounds.
  • Reduced training overhead: Easier for users to understand and use CyberArk PSM within RDM.
  • Operational consistency: Maintains a unified workflow across all supported session types.
