The FIDO (Fast IDentity Online) Alliance has announced that starting this year, the first Thursday in May will be known as “World Passkey Day.” This annual occasion aims to advance and promote the use of passkeys, which leverage cryptographic key pairs to authenticate login attempts. Passkeys are widely considered to be more secure than conventional passwords, and are especially effective at resisting phishing.
Understanding passkeys
Devolutions’ Subject Matter Expert, Adam, recently shared a great article exploring the origins, mechanics, and practical applications of passkeys. Adam’s article is highly recommended for both technical and non-technical audiences who want to understand the fundamentals of passkeys, how they work, and why they’re considered the future of authentication.
The poll question
To mark the inaugural World Passkey Day, this month’s poll question asks: Does your company use passkeys for authentication? If your answer is YES, then what was your experience like moving from passwords to passkeys? If your answer is NO, then why not?
Passkey facts
While you’re mulling over your response to the poll question, here are some interesting passkey facts:
- The FIDO Alliance developed the passkey standard framework, which is used for creating secure, passwordless authentication methods.
- More than 15 billion user accounts are now equipped with the option to use a passkey — a 50% jump from a year earlier
- Currently, 93% of devices can support passkeys
- On average, user can sign in with a passkey in about 15 seconds, compared to 30 seconds when using passwords.
- While passkeys are growing in popularity and strongly recommended, many services still allow the option to use a password to sign into an account.
- The Devolutions Workspace browser extension makes it easy to add and manage passkeys for Devolutions Server and Devolutions Hub Personal data sources (learn more here).
