The new portable license feature in Remote Desktop Manager (RDM) is a game-changer for IT teams, managed service providers (MSPs), and anyone else using distributed installations who needs to streamline access across multiple client environments. With the portable license, RDM intelligently retains licensing information provided by primary data sources — such as Devolutions Server (DVLS), Devolutions Hub Business, or SQL Server — and reuses the license securely to simplify access to other client data sources without needing to add, assign, or reassign licenses manually.
Use cases
Portable licenses were designed for two key use cases:
-
Rapid client support: When an MSP, using their own Hub or DVLS, needs to quickly assist a client using Devolutions Hub or DVLS, the portable license provides immediate access while maintaining the client's workflow intact and eliminating additional license requests.
-
Manage multiple clients efficiently: Technicians frequently switching between client environments can effortlessly access diverse data sources without juggling licenses, ensuring smooth operations.
Configuring portable licenses
When a technician connects to a primary data source (DVLS, Devolutions Hub, or SQL Server), RDM caches the active license for a default seven-day duration. If the technician later needs to access a client's separate data source (Hub, for example) and no license is immediately available, RDM seamlessly checks its stored licenses, and if one is still active, RDM will automatically reuse it. This eliminates the need for the remote data source to provide additional licenses or for technicians to manage separate single-user licenses manually.
To enable the use of portable licenses in RDM, navigate to Administration > System settings > Application > General
and select the checkbox labeled Allow portable license
. Below is an example for SQL.
Simplifying access to remote data sources and clients
-
Efficient license management: Dramatically reduce administrative overhead by taking full advantage of existing licenses, eliminating the need for multiple licenses across various client platforms.
-
Seamless technician experience: MSPs can quickly and easily connect to client systems, improving service efficiency and client satisfaction.
-
Enhanced security: Securely use licenses without exposing sensitive license keys to client environments.
With the portable license feature, Remote Desktop Manager empowers MSPs and IT teams to provide exceptional service to their clients, reducing friction and enhancing productivity across every engagement.
