Over the past few years, passkeys have emerged as a secure and convenient alternative to traditional passwords, ushering in a passwordless future for authentication. As part of our commitment to modern, secure sign-in methods, Devolutions has integrated passkey support across several products, allowing users to store, manage, and use passkeys seamlessly.
If you’re new to passkeys, our article "Decoding passkeys: The key to a passwordless world" offers a great introduction: in short, passkeys leverage public key cryptography, in which a private key is stored on your device and used for authentication.
Now, let’s look at how you can start using them in Devolutions products.
Storing and using a passkey with Devolutions Workspace
The easiest way to get started is with Devolutions Workspace, which simplifies passkey storage and usage across supported platforms. The Devolutions Workspace browser extension allows you to quickly access and use stored entries. When you visit a website, the extension detects the available passkey in your chosen data source and automatically suggests it, making sign-ins effortless.
Creating a passkey for your Devolutions Account
Those with Devolutions Accounts can use a passkey to sign into the Devolutions Portal and the Devolutions Forum. Setting up a passkey is simple: first, from the Portal, select Sign-in & Security to add a security key. You will be prompted to generate the passkey, which can then be used for future sign-ins.
Managing passkeys in Devolutions Server, Devolutions Hub, and Remote Desktop Manager
Passkey management is available across multiple Devolutions products:
- Devolutions Server (self-hosted)
- Devolutions Hub (cloud-hosted)
- Remote Desktop Manager (when using either of the above as a data source)
These advanced data sources and Remote Desktop Manager allow you to modify the passkey's name or delete the entry. However, because passkey encryption relies on the associated website, modifying the linked site or passkey data itself is not possible. The Devolutions Workspace browser extension works with both advanced data sources, allowing you to save passkeys wherever you see fit!
