I’m going to start by telling you that I’m a BIG fan of podcasts. I think they’re a great way to learn about all kinds of new information while you’re in the car, walking your dog, working out at the gym, on a flight, or in the shower (just make sure to have a waterproof speaker!). And I’m certainly not the only one who is into podcasts. 51% of people have listened to at least one podcast in 2019, and many people listen to several different podcasts.
For this article, I got together with my geeky colleagues here at Devolutions, and together we created a list of our favorite IT-related podcasts. We encourage you to check these out, because they’re interesting, informative and entertaining (and if your boss catches you listening to them at work, you can honestly say that you’re improving your IT skills!).
1. The Hanselminutes Podcast
What I like most about Scott’s podcast is that he has some extremely insightful guests from the IT world. On some other podcasts, guests have a lot of knowledge, but they aren’t great at communicating it. In other cases, guests are good communicators, but they don’t have much to say. Scott’s guests, on the other hand, are almost always smart, articulate and informative.

2. Security Weekly
There are two main segments to Security Weekly: a technical segment that focuses on stuff like creating open source security tools, and a news segment that looks at current and future trends, happenings, and so on.
What makes this podcast so great is that even though the subject can get quite technical, you don’t have to be a CSO or sysadmin to learn something new and useful. The discussion is relaxed, casual and friendly. It’s not like a (boring) lecture at school. It’s more like meeting a bunch of IT folks in the bar at a big conference and having a great conversation.
3. Sysadmin Today
The Sysadmin Today podcast covers strategies, tips, best practices and solutions in the IT world that are relevant to Sysadmins, as well as other IT pros who are responsible for keeping devices, networks and users compliant and safe.
The podcast regularly features great guests from the IT world, and the conversation is always interesting and lively. The biggest reason for this is the host Paul Joyner, who has nearly 20 years of experience in the IT field. He is incredibly passionate and competent.
4. Iron Sysadmin
This podcast always starts with a powerful rock song, which I love!
After focusing on the latest news in the Sysadmin space, each podcast focuses on specific topics. There is a lot of audience interaction, as people call, email and text in, which make things even more interesting. And there’s a lot of humor, which isn’t surprising since Sysadmins are usually pretty hilarious (as my colleague Derick discovered!). So far, they’ve done over 60 podcasts, so you’ll have plenty to choose from if you want to check it out. I can assure you, it’s far from boring!
5. Smashing Security
Last but definitely not least, Smashing Security is a great podcast with ton of variety! It’s fun, informative, and very easy to listen to. It’s led by industry veterans Graham Cluley, an award-winning security blogger who is very well-known in the computer security industry, and Carole Theriault, who founded Sophos and is the Director of Tick Tock Social, a digital media and communications consultancy firm. Together, they talk about all kinds of stuff, from the Capitol One data breach to zombie chickens (I swear, this is a real thing…).
If these amazing IT podcasts aren’t already on your playlist, I hope you give them a listen — because they’re all great and well worth your time. And yes, in case you’re wondering, we are in the process of launching our very own podcast! Stay tuned for details!
