As you might expect from someone working in marketing for a software solutions company, I spend much of my day communicating with IT pros, including customers, colleagues, members of our reseller network, strategic partners, and so on. And over the years, one of the interesting things I’ve noticed is that there tends to be a big gap between what IT pros have as their job title, and what they really do on a daily basis.
One Head, Many Hats
Basically, it’s amazing to see how many IT pros are doing the jobs of two people — or sometimes more — and wearing “many hats” as the saying goes. For example, I’ve met network architects who also provide level 1 support, and tech support specialists who often help the sales team close deals (especially when dealing with technically sophisticated prospective customers!). Not only that, but more and more developers are being asked to onboard new staff and run learning labs once their boss has found out they have a talent for training.
In fact, coming across IT pros who multitask like this seems to be the norm rather than the exception, which brings me to this month’s poll question: What is your job title vs. what do you really do?
IT & Non-IT Tasks
Please post your responses below. And of course, don’t feel that you must limit your list of tasks to the IT field. For example, if you do any non-geek tasks – like you’re in charge of the office coffee supply, which, as we all know, is a VERY important role! – then feel free to list it.
You can also include tasks that have been a pleasant surprise, even though they weren’t part of what you were expecting when you first started. And of course, please also give us the grim details of any unexpected tasks that annoy and frustrate you — but you competently do them anyway, because you’re an IT superhero. To whom more is given, more is expected, right?
You Could Win
Simply by participating in this month’s poll, you’ll be automatically entered to win one of two $25 Amazon gift cards. As usual, the lucky winners will be announced at the end of the month along with the poll results. Thanks in advance for participating and good luck!
