Hello everyone! Our hire wagon is back at full speed and I’m delighted to introduce you to my great new colleague, Yann Roland Lemasson, who is our new Learning & Development Specialist. Yann moved here from Las Vegas, which is pretty unusual and a big change of pace for him!
I recently had the chance to chat with Yann and learn more about his experience, his role here at Devolutions and his interests. Here’s a look at our conversation:
Can you tell me a bit about your background?
At the age of five my dad brought home our very first family computer: a Commodore 64. That experience led me down a road of exploration through the world of computers. Later in life, my fascination with technology inspired me to leave Montreal to earn a Computer Science/Web Design degree in Florida. After getting hired as a Systems Administrator, I married my college sweetheart and we lived in Pensacola, Florida, for the next three years. We then moved to Las Vegas where I taught high school math on a part-time basis, while also working as the Creative Media Director for a non-profit organization. Finally, after 17 years of living in the U.S., we decided to come back home to La Belle Province... Ah! Home... Family... Poutine... Winter...
What would you say is your biggest achievement?
Getting married to an amazing wife and becoming a dad to three awesome kids.
What was it about Devolutions that made you want to work here?
While applying for jobs in the Montreal area, my cousin, who lives in Berthierville — which is about an hour’s drive from Montreal — mentioned that she knew several people who worked at an amazing tech company in Lavaltrie called Devolutions. This naturally intrigued me, so I did my homework on the company, connected with a few team members, and decided to make a trip to visit. I flew out from sunny Las Vegas to chilly Lavaltrie to visit this 8th wonder of the world. After thawing out from the freezing winter outside, I walked in and I immediately knew that I wanted to work here. Everyone here was so welcoming, and I even got a nice tour from our wonderful Office Manager and VP of Human Resources Mélissa, so I decided to go for it and apply for a job. Now I am working with an amazing team and the rest is history!
What would you say are your top three strengths at work?
First, the ability to adapt to changing environments, personnel, and projects. I love embracing new challenges, while learning and adjusting to new tasks at hand.
Second, even though my formal training is in mathematics and computer science, my passion lies more with creative communication via media and design. Having both a logical and creative side has helped me effectively lead teams with various talents and abilities, while understanding perspectives from different points of view, and bridging gaps between departments.
Third, the bottom line for me is that I just love working with people! I feel that it is my responsibility to invest in other peoples’ lives, and help them become the best version of themselves. This has helped me grow personally as I connect with coworkers and clients in a meaningful way.
What tasks do you carry out in your job, and what are some of the tools you use?
Right now, I am working with the quality assurance team looking for bugs, testing new features, investigating issues, and learning all the intricacies of the solutions we offer. Some of the tools I’ve been using so far are TestRail, Jira by Atlassian, Slack, Microsoft Remote Desktop, SQL Server, and of course, our Devolutions products: Remote Desktop Manager, WaykNow, and Devolutions Password Server.
What is your impression of working here?
The team members, including all of the managers and leaders, are enjoyable to work with, down to earth, and have a genuine passion for what they do. All of this, combined with the wonderful family atmosphere and team spirit, makes for an awesome work environment.
What goals would you like to achieve at Devolutions?
I’m grateful to be part of the Devolutions team, and my top priority is to give back as much as I can to this great company. I hope to contribute in a meaningful way, and I aspire to support our company’s tradition of providing amazing products and support to our clients.
On a personal note, what are some of your hobbies and interests?
In this fast-paced world we live in, I find myself trying to slow down and enjoy the simple things in life, like reading good books, playing the guitar, studying my Bible, cooking food, drinking great espresso, and spending time with my family. To summarize what the Bible says God asks of mankind, “To do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God.” Micah 6:8. I hope to live up to this high calling.
