One of the many things that I like about my job is that I get to interact with amazing people from across the world. And sometimes, I get to work with them, too — which is the case our great new Software Developer, Aymeric Jala! Aymeric hails from the French island of Réunion, which is about 9090 miles or 14,360 kilometers from Devolutions HQ in Lavaltrie, Canada.

Like many of our new team members, Aymeric was part of our highly successful internship program last year, and we’re delighted that he’s agreed to join us. I recently had the chance to chat with Aymeric to learn a little more about his background, role and personality.

Here’s a look at our conversation:

Can you tell me a bit about your background?

My educational background is primarily in economics, and I graduated with a degree in business management. I've always been interested in technology, and so when I finished my degree I decided to follow my passion and focus on learning about IT. I ended up earning another bachelor’s degree in computer science from UQTR, which included working with C#, C, Java, SQL, Android, and Web programming such as HTML, CSS, PHP, and JavaScript.

What would you say is your biggest achievement so far?

I’d say that it was saying goodbye to everything and everyone I knew back in Réunion, and heading across the Atlantic to start a brand new life in Canada. It has been quite an adventure, and I’m happy to have found Devolutions, where I completed my internship. I met some great people and learned a lot.

What was it about Devolutions that made you want to work here?

I heard about Devolutions at university, and had the opportunity to speak with the company’s CEO, David Hervieux, and Marketing Director, Maxime Trottier. They were very friendly, and explained to me what Devolutions was all about in terms of its vision, culture and commitment to employees and customers. I was especially impressed when David told me that he is committed to demonstrating that it’s possible to have a successful and growing enterprise outside of a big city. That really appealed to me!

What would you say are your top three strengths at work?

I’d say that I am persistent, I’m always interested in learning new things, and I’m very open to feedback that helps me improve and do better.

What tasks do you carry out in your job, and what are some of the tools that you use?

Recently, I finished working on the Devolutions web store to make it more responsive, and to improve user experience. I mainly used WebStorm, as well as Visual Studio, SQL Server, code editors, and of course web browsers. Now, I’m starting to re-create the store using Angular 2.

What are your impressions about working here?

The team is welcoming and supportive, and the work environment is fantastic.

What goals would you like to achieve at Devolutions?

I’d like to learn more about web development, and improve my experience and knowledge working with programming tools. I want to constantly improve, and have enriching professional experiences.

On a personal note, what are some of your hobbies and interests?

I love music, sports, and am fascinated by what can be accomplished with technology. I play the drums and guitar, and when I was younger I also learned to play a little piano. As far as specific sports are concerned, I enjoy several combat sports such as Muay-Thai, boxing, karate, jiu-jitsu, krav-maga, and I’m also into bodybuilding.
