We’re g-r-o-w-i-n-g again! Honestly, I think we may have to start wearing name tags around here. Or maybe we need to create “Employee Name Vault Manager” to keep track of the wonderful new team members who are joining us on a monthly (and sometimes weekly!) basis.

And yes, all of this means that it’s my delightful responsibility to introduce you to the newest member of our Android Software Development Team. Please say hello to François Dubois!

Recently, I had the pleasure of chatting with François to learn more about his background and role. Here’s a snapshot of our conversation:

Can you tell me a bit about your professional background?

I have been working in software development for more than 12 years in different roles, including as a software developer, project manager and team lead. I’ve worked in various fields and industries, including many years in the energy sector where my team developed software that governed real-time data acquisition, and was used mainly in power stations and substations. I’ve also developed voice recognition software, and have a very good understanding of why it’s so hard for phones to do the right thing when you ask them something! I’ve also developed software that optimizes public transportation, and recently worked on an Enterprise Resources Planning software project. Over the years, I’ve worked mainly with C/C++ and Java.

What would you say is your biggest professional achievement so far?

I’d say it was implementing a new feature in a short time with a technology that, at the time, I didn’t know well. I worked hard and learned a lot, but the biggest reward was when my customers were happy with the end result and gave me some very positive feedback. That feature is still being used today, which makes me even prouder.

What was it about Devolutions that made you want to work here?

Interestingly, I had an interview a few years ago at Devolutions, and was very impressed. While things went really well, the timing wasn’t ideal, and so we agreed to keep in touch. But I remember thinking to myself that Devolutions was definitely a company that I would want to work for. The business philosophy is unique and supportive. Well, a few weeks ago David contacted me and told me about an opportunity, and I didn’t hesitate to accept it.  I also really like the location, because I don’t have to deal with traffic every day. As you can tell, I’m happy to join the team and excited to be here.

What would you say are your top three strengths at work?

At work, I’m very meticulous. I always strive to do a good job. I’m not saying that all of my code is always bug free, but I always conduct a lot of tests and try to think of different scenarios and use cases. I’d also say that I have strong analytical skills and that I’m a good team member. I’m always ready to help somebody and work with my team.

What tasks do you carry out in your job and what are some of the tools you use?

At the moment, I’m working with the RDM Android team and am using Visual Studio 2013/2015. Soon, the plan is for me to move to the Wayk Now team and develop the Android client.

What are your impressions of working here?

The culture is great and it is exactly how David described it to me. There is a good mix between working hard and having fun. And this is the first company I’ve worked for where so much information is shared, including strategy and plans, which I find very helpful, as it helps me see the big picture. The level of trust and transparency is incredible.

What goals would you like to achieve at Devolutions?

My first goal is to fully understand all of our products and technologies. After that, of course, my focus will be on helping our business grow and creating the best solutions in the market.

On a personal note, what are some of your hobbies and interests?

I enjoy many sports, including hockey, dek (i.e. floor/street) hockey, cross-country skiing, and hiking. I recently took a trip to Mont-Valin National Park and went snowshoeing. It was amazing. During the summer, I also like road cycling. I take trips on my bike and it is always a new adventure. I’m looking forward to heading out on the road this summer.

Another interest of mine is woodworking. I took a course last year where I built a shelf, and I’m registered for another class this spring where I’ll build a toy box. I would like to have more tools at home and be able to build some handmade furniture.

Please share a few words with our community of IT pros:

The level of commitment and focus here on being the best is really impressive. Everyone pays a lot of attention to questions, feedback, feature requests, and more. A lot of companies just talk about listening to customers, but Devolutions takes it very seriously. I’m happy to be part of the team and look forward to creating great products and solutions!
